A Message from Interim EMS Director Homer Lewis
Rowan County Emergency Medical Services provides both emergency and non-emergency care and transport to the citizens of Rowan County. We serve a population of over 23,000 with a total of 286 square mile of coverage area. The service is licensed for seven (7) advanced and basic staffed ambulances. We annually make over 5,000 runs covering all 911 requests for ambulances, along with transfer to other regional hospitals for higher levels of care as needed.
We support all of our fire departments in Rowan County by providing standby services at structural and brush fires. We standby sporting and special events as requested supporting both Rowan County Public Schools and Morehead State University. The ambulance service supports the City of Morehead Police Department by attaching tactical trained paramedic to their Special Response Team which supports law enforcement operations that may be deemed high risks.
We have 19 full time employees with 18 licensed and certified as Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians. We provide 24/7 coverage. We have a large group of part-time staff who serve our community on as needed bases. We are approved as an American Safety and Health Institute Training Center providing CPR and Basic First Aid Training to local first responder agencies.
Our staff maintains annual refresher training to meet the requirements set forth by the Kentucky Board of EMS and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. We respond to Hazardous Materials calls at the operation level with the ability to decontaminate patients with certain chemical exposures. We work with other response agencies such as Rowan County Emergency Management Office, Kentucky Emergency Management along with the Local Emergency Planning Committee to plan for natural and manmade disasters.
